What Type of Mindset Are You In?

“Everything begins inside your mind; With the right mentality you will succeed.”

There are many different types of mindsets, the most common two being growth and fixed mindset. Someone with a growth mindset believes that intelligence and ability are a function of hard work and practice. Where someone with a fixed mindset believes that talent, intelligence, and success is inherited and that no amount of work will make them smarter or better.

Cordae Amari Dunston, a hip hop rapper recently gave a Ted Talk on the regimen he has followed his entire life, especially when things did not go as planned. Cordae is a firm believer that how you handle hard times is what determines an individuals’ destiny. Cordae’s “Hi-level mindset” would fall under the growth perspective discussed earlier and follows a 4-step process shown below.

Step 1 – Remain Positive no matter what people or life may throw at you.

Not everything you encounter is going to be positive. Life is about trial and tribulations. There will be things that knock you down, or make you want to quit. It is important have a positive outlook. Life is like a book, not every chapter is going to be perfect. However, it not about how the chapter starts, it’s about how the chapter ends.

Step 2 – Always be intentional with your desires.

Being intentional means making deliberate choices to reflect what is most important to you. This helps to maintain a positive mindset, reach goals, experience more clarity, and be more present. It can also increase attention and commitment bringing more purpose and meaning to our lives. Instead of fearing failure, individuals who are intentional learn from their mistakes and continue to make the best of their circumstances. Here are some tips on how to be intentional.

  • Write down your goals.
  • Read the goals out loud daily or multiple times a week. This increases serotonin and starts the day with positive energy.

Life is like a theater, but the question is not whether you are in the audience or on the stage but rather, are you where you want to be?

Step 3 – Discipline.

Discipline builds habits, habits make routines, and routines become who you are daily. The value of discipline is the way to do what needs to be done. It helps us train our minds and body and enables us to focus on our goals and regulate our emotions.

When  motivation is low, that’s when discipline kicks in. Mastering the art of discipline will change your life. That’s where the magic of any goal happens.

Life is like a 10-speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use.

Step 4 – Remove the negative people around you.

You are a product of those you associate with. If you have negative people in your life, holding you down or making you doubt yourself, you will not achieve that discipline you desire. Toxic people sell you short, when you listen to them, you sell yourself short.

Final Thoughts

It’s all about Mindset. From the moment you wake up to the moment you rest your head at night.  Everything is up to you. Your emotions, thoughts, perception, and reactions. The hi-level mindset is not a recipe for perfection, but a commitment to honor your potential. Don’t let your small failures, make you lose sight of the bigger picture.
